3 Signs Your Rat Is Sick

Rats make great pets, but you need to take care of them so that they can have long, healthy lives. Be aware of common symptoms rats display when they are sick so that you know when treatment should be pursued.

Itching

If you notice that your rat is itching itself a lot, then it could be a sign of parasites. Mites are common pests that attach themselves to rats, and they result in a lot of discomfort. Prompt treatment is necessary before an infection occurs.

Breathing Problems

When an infection does develop, it will generally cause breathing issues within the rat. You may even hear your pet gasping for air if the problem is severe enough. Loud breathing is often accompanied by watery eyes and a sharp decline in appetite.

Appears Hurt

Another way to tell that something is wrong is if your rat acts differently when you go to pick it up. If it flinches or makes a sound, then something is most likely hurting. It may have gotten injured somehow. Something could be sprained or broken, and a visit to a veterinarian will be necessary.

Most symptoms of rat illness are similar to what you would experience if you got sick yourself. You can look at this website to find a great rodent vet in Morgan Hill to help your furry friend out.
